L’auberge Ensorcelée represents another exploration within filmmaking, arriving from Georges Méliès shortly after his initial foray into what he termed a “horror” film, Le Manoir du Diable. This brief presentation depicts an individual experiencing disturbances at a purportedly haunted hotel, with the establishment consistently bothering our protagonist. The film can be considered a gentle and very short adaptation of 1408. Its structure is quite straightforward: a single character endures torment to demonstrate various special effects available at that time. Instead of eliciting fear, the man primarily experiences frustration, leading the narrative to unfold more as a comedy than a true horror experience. The humorous or “scary” moments are more playful than startling. Objects vanish and reappear repeatedly. A set of boots moves independently. A bed vanishes entirely. However, these events mainly serve to highlight the use of "jump cuts" and magnets in film techniques. Georges Méliès once again appears as himself within the movie.
