This amusing, approximately six-minute short was helmed by Spanish director Segundo de Chomon and features some truly original and imaginative special effects. The performers in this film have a very easygoing style with their physical comedy routines. There’s no lack of slapstick humor in La maison... which isn't unusual for these brief movies. It’s also worth mentioning that this is a production from the well-known French company Pathé Frères. I hadn’t seen this film before, and I spend quite a bit of time looking for obscure visual treasures online. Thanks to Reddit, particularly /r/truehorror, I discovered what feels like a gift from the horror genre. The premise is straightforward: three incredibly tolerant travelers discover a cottage in the woods. Or at least it seems that way; they might have rented it instead. It’s not really important either way. Once inside, things immediately start to go haywire. Demons mock them, luggage whirls through the air, and portraits come alive. Naturally, the travelers huddle together out of fear, then quickly return to a state of calm once the disturbances cease. This pattern continues for quite some time. They make poor choices and never attempt to escape. Eventually, our clueless wanderers are rewarded for their foolishness and promptly devoured by a massive demon—possibly even Satan himself. The ending is satisfying in a way that’s similar to Cabin in the Woods. Carefree individuals stumble upon an unfamiliar location and plan to defile it with their transgressions, but they ultimately face consequences for their recklessness. It's a wonderful silent short; I wholeheartedly suggest watching it—it only takes six minutes.
