Reno on The Best Offer

8/10 · Oct 24, 2016

Giuseppe Tornatore, a well-known Italian filmmaker, wrote and directed this English-language film, which stars Geoffrey Rush. It centers on an elderly art and antique auctioneer named Virgil. The narrative unfolds during his last days working in his profession, when he encounters a young woman who wants to auction off inherited antiques. She’s enigmatic due to her health issues, and the movie explores how they develop a connection despite their rocky first interactions. There's a surprise at the end of the film. The storytelling was excellent; the script was superb, as was the accompanying music. The score really sticks with you, especially during the ending credits because it brings back all those memories from the story and continues playing. This music received multiple awards. While I found the narrative enjoyable, I began to anticipate what would happen toward the conclusion. That didn't ruin my enjoyment of it. I appreciated the film’s theme, which felt somewhat original, and I also liked the ending itself, though I thought it could have been altered or expanded upon. The resolution might not satisfy everyone, but it is cleverly done. The acting was strong across the board, but Geoffrey Rush gave a truly outstanding performance that stood out. It may have taken three years, but there’s still time to see a film as good as this one. It's among the finest suspense films in recent memory and worth seeing if you want some quality entertainment. I suggest checking it out if you haven’t already. _8/10_
