The race for the presidential nomination reaches a turbulent conclusion with the frontrunners in a stalemate. Russell, portrayed by Henry Fonda, embodies integrity, while Cantwell, played by Cliff Robertson, demonstrates political acumen. Both are vying for the endorsement of former President Hockstader, brought to life by Lee Tracy, as Russell attempts to keep the competition free from personal attacks and underhanded tactics. As with many films exploring American politics, it illustrates a reality where victory isn’t necessarily earned by the most deserving individual; the "Land of the Free" doesn't always live up to its name. Neither contender seems particularly suited for the position, and the outcome hinges on who is willing to resort to damaging their opponent’s character. Fonda and Robertson deliver solid performances, but they are overshadowed by Tracy’s portrayal of a calculating and deceptive figure who feels convincingly like someone who once held power. The film maintains a brisk tempo, filled with captivating schemes, and until the very end, I remained uncertain about the victor. While I appreciated the resolution, it felt somewhat evasive, as if Gore Vidal hesitated to commit to a definitive outcome. No one is entirely villainous, and no one is purely virtuous – but does settling for less always provide the right solution? It's enjoyable overall.
