I found The Bellboy to be quite entertaining, even though it lacks any real narrative; it’s essentially a collection of moments where the bellboy finds himself in increasingly difficult situations without uttering a word. It makes me hope that more comedies, particularly those featuring performers from SNL or SCTV, would adopt this style—I believe they might achieve greater success with it. Regarding Jerry Lewis, my opinion is similar to what I understand about the French perspective: I consider him a genius. What appeals to me most is his willingness to experiment as a filmmaker. Sometimes, I feel he’s just as insightful as Godard, but with the confidence to be himself instead of searching for someone else to represent him.
