I mostly recall Marc Singer’s performance in "V" from 1984, but he does an acceptable job here in this fantasy adventure film that borrows heavily from other stories. The movie begins with similarities to this year's “Conan,” as his village is destroyed and “Dar” (Singer) finds himself among the wreckage, armed only with a sword to seek revenge against the villainous high priest “Maax” (Rip Torn) and his followers known as the "Juns." This sinister figure resides at the top of a large stone pyramid where he regularly offers children as sacrifices to the gods, and it’s established early on that he was involved in the trouble facing “Dar” (Singer), who is actually the king of “Aruk,” unaware that his father was betrayed by the same priest. His unusual childhood has provided him with certain benefits; he's able to communicate with an eagle, a black tiger, and a couple of playful but dangerous ferrets. As "Dar" progresses on his journey, he also meets the spirited temple maiden “Kiri” (Tanya Roberts), the powerful “Seth” (John Amos), and his apprentice “Tal” (Joshua Milrad), but will they possess enough strength to defeat the frightening authority and their guards? Singer is a fairly convincing hero as he moves around in his loincloth, spinning his sword and taking care of the antagonists. Torn doesn't appear frequently, but gives an over-the-top performance reminiscent of Frank Langella, and the entire production, with its minimal clothing, proceeds quite enjoyably until a dramatic ending that allows everyone, even the ferrets, to have their moment. The film’s quality is decent, although the editing occasionally falters, and the music consistently brought to mind "Battlestar Galactica." I found it to be rather enjoyable overall.
