John Chard on The Beast in the Cellar

3/10 · Aug 4, 2015

This movie really should have stayed hidden away! The story centers on two elderly women who harbor a mystery within their cellar, a mystery that might surface as killings begin in the surrounding area. There's also the question of why soldiers seem to be specifically chosen as victims. Beryl Reid and Flora Robson deliver performances, but they’re trapped inside one of Tigon’s weakest efforts. It isn’t necessarily due to technical shortcomings—the production values are actually quite respectable—but rather because it’s incredibly dull. The film is almost entirely dialogue-driven, filled with meaningless pronouncements that make the eventual climax feel unearned. Even Tessa Wyatt's appearance as a nurse in what seems like a dream scenario can't improve things. Tony Tenser, who once ran Tigon, stated his goal was simply to generate income, and films like this clearly illustrate that point. It’s difficult to reconcile this with the company’s production of Witchfinder General! 3/10
