A couple of young adults (played by Liana Liberato and Noah Le Gros) head to a secluded spot on Cape Cod for a romantic trip before summer begins. Their quiet time is interrupted by an older pair (Jake Weber and Maryann Nagel), but that turns out to be minor compared to what’s happening around them. "The Beach House," from 2019, is skillfully crafted as a slow-developing ecological mystery set along the Northeastern coast. It initially resembles another film called “Beach House,” but then shifts into science fiction/horror territory in its latter half. The scenery is pretty in a standard coastal way, yet also feels empty and strangely unsettling. The overall feeling is ordinary at first, becoming progressively bleak. The filmmakers aimed for an atmosphere of unease rather than intense scares, although there are some startling moments toward the end. Liana Liberato does nicely as the lead character, but honestly, the whole cast performs well—there are only four people in it. Things do get a little dull around the middle point, admittedly, but the writer/director clearly aimed to make things seem believable, like considering what might actually occur if this were real. So, if you enjoy understated drama and an unsettling atmosphere, then it’s probably worth seeing. But if you require constant action and big dramatic moments, this isn't for you. Even if the story doesn’t appeal, the film provides a nice way to experience Cape Cod without physically being there. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and was filmed in North Truro, Massachusetts, close to the tip of the Cape, overlooking the bay. GRADE: B-/C+
