Colin Farrell and Paul Dano give remarkable performances, yet _The Batman_ feels like an extended, tiring journey through Gotham that ends with a ridiculously amplified puzzle that doesn’t justify the effort. The choice to have both Batman and Jim Gordon speak in hushed, gravelly voices seems overdone, as does Gordon's habit of referring to Batman as "Chief" whenever they interact. It should be acknowledged that _The Batman_ gives considerable attention to depicting Gotham’s criminal element, but the way the story unfolds is comparable to Bugs Bunny intending to turn left in Albuquerque; a wandering descent into darkness that isn’t really needed.
