Let’s get straight to the point: The Barrens, a reimagining of the Jersey Devil story, isn't an exceptional film. Given how harshly it has been received by many horror fans, you have to question what people were hoping for from a production like this – a movie that early reports suggested wouldn't make much of an impact on the horror scene? The film demonstrates a level of skill appropriate for its budget. Considering some of the movies produced for various science fiction and horror channels on cable television, The Barrens is certainly better than many of those. It’s true that there are the expected plot holes, and director and writer Darren Lynn Bousman struggles with pacing; however, it's clear a good deal of thought went into the script as he seems to be trying to offer more than just a simple "monster in the woods" experience. The cast delivers solid performances, though they really shine only when the story takes a turn for the worse in the final third. I wouldn’t suggest this with any real enthusiasm, particularly not to serious horror enthusiasts, but if you're looking for an average “B” movie to watch while relaxing at home (or wherever), it’s more worthwhile than some of the low-quality Syfy channel productions that appear constantly. 5.5/10
