The movie opens with journalists observing a wedding—the daughter of an industrialist marrying the son of another. The scene seems commonplace until an additional cake, molded to resemble an office building and featuring a rose protruding from a seventh-floor window, is brought into the reception. This detail signifies the window from which the groom's father took his own life. Soon after, two high-ranking executives are arrested due to suspicions surrounding a ¥12 billion transaction. Both refuse to cooperate with investigators; one is released, then rearrested, and ultimately meets an unfortunate end when struck by a truck. It appears that past events might be resurfacing to affect those involved. The story evokes elements of "Hamlet," but this isn't among Kurosawa’s most enjoyable works. Despite its nearly two-and-a-quarter-hour runtime, the characters feel somewhat lacking in depth. Toshirô Mifune delivers a dependable performance as the groom ("Nishi"), and initially there is a compelling connection between him and Kô Nishimura ("Shirai"). The latter character is involved in the shady dealings and is essentially frightened into assisting "Nishi" in revealing those responsible for his suffering and the activities that caused it. Unfortunately, the rest of the acting doesn't quite reach the usual level. There’s a significant amount of dialogue, which contributes to a slower pace and a feeling of weariness during the film's middle section—precisely when the plot should be gaining momentum. The ending also feels anticlimactic, though it is believable and aligns with the spirit of the title and original play; still, I felt somewhat let down after seeing it.
