A teenage girl who seems like an average, good person (played by Alicia Silverstone) accepts a babysitting job unexpectedly somewhere in Los Angeles. Unbeknownst to her, she triggers the imaginations of the boy’s father (J.T. Walsh), a young boy, her boyfriend (Jeremy London), and his friend who tries to be cool like Fonzie (Nicky Katt). Alicia Silverstone was very popular during the 90s, but the direct-to-video release “The Babysitter” (1995) didn’t get much attention. It's not as good as "Clueless" (1995) or "The Crush" (1993), though it remains a worthwhile 90s movie featuring Silverstone, blending drama and comedy with romantic and thriller aspects, similar to “True Crime” (1995) and “Excess Baggage” (1997). As mentioned earlier, the film explores how men of different ages respond to a young woman who isn’t fully conscious of the impact she has on them, and doesn't seem to care. The plot is strengthened by the fact that she's genuinely kind and unremarkable, not realizing the strong feelings she unintentionally provokes in others. “The Babysitter” does a decent job showing the unseen world of fantasy people have, not just men (though it mostly focuses on them. This is something everyone needs to keep an eye on and manage; if ignored, it can lead to trouble. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 29 minutes, and filming took place in Pasadena & Ventura, California. Other actors appearing include Lee Garlington, George Segal and Lois Chiles. GRADE: B-
