The Babadook is an effectively creepy horror movie. I would have appreciated further exploration of the monster and its nature, although the film provides enough information and does a good job establishing the unsettling feeling it creates. The sound editing was particularly noteworthy; it's skillfully done throughout. Essie Davis delivers a terrific performance as Amelia, portraying her character’s emotions convincingly—I initially felt empathy for her situation with her son. Noah Wiseman plays Samuel, and he is remarkably impressive considering his age; he contributes significantly to several scenes. The film has substance, builds suspense well, and strives for genuine horror rather than relying on cheap jump scares, something I always appreciate in this genre. While I wished there was a bit more, I generally enjoyed it.
