A wealthy Parisian woman calls her lawyer to make changes to her will, leading her devoted butler, Edgar, to believe he’s about to inherit everything. He soon finds out, however, that things aren't so simple—the cats must be taken care of first! Annoyed by these animals, he puts together a scheme to get rid of them permanently: drugging them, driving them far away, and dropping them off over a swiftly flowing river. That should do it, right? But naturally, something has to go wrong for the film to exist, and "Duchess" is now trying to retrieve her kittens. Fortunately, they meet the clever “Thomas O’Malley,” who offers his assistance in getting them back home. A series of amusing adventures unfolds, a subtle romantic thread emerges, and we're introduced to some exceptional jazz cats. The animation style brought to mind "101 Dalmatians" (1961), with similarly appealing characters. The film shines when the whole group is together—the “Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat” sequence gets your foot tapping, and the ending involving the cats, a horse, a large trunk, and a trip to Timbuktu for the unfortunate one provides a satisfying conclusion for everyone (except maybe their neighbors). It's an enjoyable film, with a good pace, and feels like possibly the last of the original, hand-drawn Disney movies that I’ve genuinely liked.
