My expectations weren't met by this film. It examines Donald Trump’s ascent, and Sebastian Stan manages to do a decent job portraying some of his well-known behaviors. The performance successfully replicates things like facial expressions and the tendency to repeat phrases for emphasis. However, much of the rest felt like unsubstantiated, sometimes harsh, guesses about his connection with Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), whose veiled homosexuality seems to offer a more significant commentary on New York’s evolving attitude toward AIDS. Trump's journey from affluence to even greater success is treated too briefly; there isn't enough detail regarding his real estate deals, construction projects, and conflicts with an Ed Koch-led city government. The narrative feels disjointed and somewhat flimsy. Maria Bakalova does a passable job as Ivana, but the family drama surrounding the rest of Trump’s relatives doesn’t quite come together, and I had difficulty placing the accent(s) spoken by his mother (Catherine McNally), which prevents that complicated familial dynamic from having much effect on the plot. Jeremy Strong truly shines whenever he's onscreen, portraying the unscrupulous lawyer with skill, but overall this feels like a melodrama likely to generate as much disagreement as Donald Trump himself.
