The American Astronaut presents a science fiction musical imagining what might have happened if the spirit of the American frontier had extended into space, creating a redneck retro-futuristic era. The visuals depict rough planetary settlements alongside journeys through space aboard equally weathered spacecraft. At its heart, the film explores family dynamics and the complicated relationships between families, which are portrayed in ways that could be seen as unusual. It’s strikingly beautiful to look at, filmed entirely in black and white with strong contrast that emphasizes a sense of roughness. The music is wonderful, and the musical sequences fit well within the story. I found it captivating, dramatic, humorous, and now consider it one of my all-time favorite movies. tl;dr 1975 in Warsaw: A young Homer wrote a script for his stepbrother David Lynch while listening to forbidden rockabilly records. A faded poster of Gagarin hangs on the wall, alongside a postcard from France sent by his stepfather—a truck driver who disappeared after defecting. His mother is singing in the kitchen.
