The basic idea behind this animated comedy was appealing to me. The cat, named Maurice, goes from place to place, offering assistance to people who are constantly struggling with rat infestations. After the townsfolk gather as much money as they can, a boy unexpectedly shows up and, like in the legend of Hamelin, lures all the rats away. However, it doesn't take long to discover that this is a deception. Maurice is working with his group of rats and the piper, intending for the funds to finance their journey to a magical realm described in their holy book (a comic). The story becomes more interesting when they reach a town where they encounter a significant threat, forcing Maurice to step up, locate the genuine Pied Piper and his pipe, if he wants to protect all of his companions. It’s a straightforward narrative with some enjoyable characters – I found "Dangerous Beans" and "Sardines" entertaining, and the action moves at a comfortable pace for ninety minutes. The film is definitely borrowing from other tales, and I did find the narration rather irritating eventually, but as a pleasant family movie that shows the importance of cooperation and faithfulness while also including some amusing conversations and situations, it was enjoyable overall.
