The final product, *The Amateur*, doesn’t quite live up to what one might anticipate considering the actors and filmmakers involved. Even with Rami Malek giving a dedicated portrayal, James Hawes' version of the story can’t avoid feeling predictable, restrained, and lacking in emotional depth; its straightforwardness and absence of unexpected turns are considerable drawbacks. Moments hinting at greater emotional resonance do appear, but the writing generally shies away from exploring more intricate or thought-provoking subjects, leading to a viewing that is merely diverting on a superficial level. As an espionage story aiming for introspection, it ultimately remains on the surface. Rating: C+
