Following a run-in with law enforcement, mob boss Vito (played by Robert De Niro, heavily reliant on facial prosthetics) is forced to leave the United States and entrust his childhood friend and business associate Frank (Robert De Niro without those enhancements) with managing their operations. Years pass, and Frank successfully builds upon the post-prohibition business model, steering clear of narcotics and maintaining a fragile equilibrium among the other families dominating New York’s boroughs. Vito then decides he wants to return home and reclaim his leadership position, but his unpredictable nature creates resistance from Frank and many others. Predictably, Vito asserts himself, escalating tensions for Frank. The situation intensifies when federal authorities and the US Senate initiate an effort to suppress the growing drug trade that Vito views as a lucrative opportunity. Ultimately, Frank faces difficult choices. Beyond acknowledging the skill of the makeup team who managed to make one De Niro appear convincing while the other looks like a character from a Jim Henson production, the film feels unevenly paced and lacks depth, filled with dialogue and surprisingly little action beyond an initial sequence and a particularly violent haircut later on. The historical solution presented is unusual, but the rest of the movie follows a predictable formula, which I found tedious as it jumps between different periods in their lives—their relationships, ambitions, and often brutal business dealings—before quickly summarizing events to bring the story to an abrupt conclusion. It's essentially a superficial production prioritizing style over substance, featuring a lackluster performance from the lead actor and a supporting cast that contributes little to the overall experience as it progresses at a measured but unremarkable pace. Not anyone’s best effort, unfortunately.
