It’s unusual to encounter a documentary where I found myself developing such affection for the subject, especially given my lack of prior knowledge. "Free spirit" seems like a perfect descriptor for the younger Marc-André Leclerc, who dedicates himself to traversing the world's most imposing rock faces—climbs that would likely terrify even birds. The film might just as easily have been titled "The Individualist." While not socially isolated, he clearly favored the thrill of climbing – and withstanding all the challenging conditions it brought – independently. It seemed he only conceded to having a camera crew along somewhat unwillingly, and the resulting footage is remarkable. We gain insight into both the danger involved as he scaled these massive rock formations without ropes, but also the sense of adventure, resolve, and direction that motivated him to confront these formidable and often stunning natural challenges. There are some brief, touching comments from other climbers, the filmmakers themselves, his mother, and his girlfriend, yet they aren’t really essential—this is fundamentally a story about a young man committed to shaping his own life. It feels like it deserves consideration for an Academy Award.
