Having seen this film, it’s hard to ignore how it stacks up against the 1960 John Wayne adaptation, and honestly, it doesn't fare well. Patrick Wilson portrays Colonel Travis, attempting to guide a group of Texan rebels defending an old Catholic Mission from the massive army of Mexican General Santa Anna. His job is complicated by his own shortcomings and the difficult personalities he must manage, including Davy Crockett (Tommy Lee Jones) and Jim Bowie (Jason Patric). This version expands beyond the familiar narrative of the siege itself, offering a more complete account of Texas’s emergence as an independent state. While this expansion is positive, the acting feels quite average – even lifeless at times. The script features lengthy dialogue that lacks much humor, and these significant characters are portrayed with restraint by everyone involved. The film's production quality is high; it looks visually appealing, but ultimately it has the feel of a made-for-TV movie, frequently including large battle scenes that seem more suited to a local festival than a serious historical drama.
