r96sk on The Alamo

I really didn’t find much to like about this film. To my mind, *The Alamo* drags on for a long time—a tedious 137 minutes. Even the action scenes, which should be exciting, failed to entertain because of how haphazardly they were filmed; I understand that they intended to convey confusion, but the camera work is just all over the place. Another issue is the score, which ranks among the worst I’ve ever heard. It's overly sentimental and self-important at times, making it hard to watch, although the direction doesn't help matters. They seemed to want to depict the lives of those involved, but brief lines of dialogue and dramatic music didn't allow me to connect with any of the characters. The actors don’t do anything terribly wrong, but I wasn’t able to form a bond with anyone in the film. Billy Bob Thornton is probably the strongest performer, as Davy Crockett. Dennis Quaid doesn’t have enough material to work with as Sam Houston, and no one else really makes an impression—not even Emilio Echevarría as Santa Anna. This should be gripping viewing; it wasn't – at least not for me.
