I recently watched this film at the BFI in London, and it really shines when viewed on a large screen. The movie is largely built around Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, who find themselves needing to flee advancing German East African troops during World War One by traveling downriver on a boat that’s barely functional, relying on luck and ingenuity. Robert Morley appears briefly early on, delivering a performance that perfectly establishes the tone for what turns out to be a wonderfully improbable love story. John Huston did an exceptional job of bringing CS Forrester's characters to life; they are captivating, the journey is completely absorbing, and even though the conclusion feels somewhat foreseeable, it still leaves you with a feeling of warmth. It was initially intended to star David Niven and Bette Davis, but it’s difficult to picture anyone else handling the roles as effectively as they do here.
