The Aeronauts runs for 100 minutes and seems to confirm Roger Ebert's observation that movies involving hot-air balloons rarely work out well, though it doesn't take long to demonstrate why—within the first ten minutes, a dog is dropped from a balloon via parachute. The dog lands safely, which naturally leads to the question of how an animal without intelligence or hands could manage to use a parachute. The film actually demonstrates something else entirely: that the marketing tactic of 'sex sells' has been superseded by 'gender sells.' One of the key flights shown is based on the September 5, 1862 ascent of British balloonists James Glaisher and Henry Coxwell. However, while Glaisher does appear in the film (played by Eddie Redmayne, who appears to have stumbled after his parachute presumably failed), Coxwell has been replaced by Amelia (Felicity Jones), a completely made-up character. The implication is that it’s not enough to dismiss someone simply because of their gender; they also need to be sidelined in favor of an invented character—apparently because the filmmakers couldn't be bothered with proper research. Had they done so, they would have discovered that women have always been involved in aeronautics, such as Katharina Paulus, who created the first folding parachute (and presumably didn’t put a dog at risk in the process).
