The movie opens with a disturbing scene: a young woman, partially undressed, frantically running through the rain while calling out for assistance. We discover her name is Sarah, played by Jodie Foster, and after being taken to a hospital, it's revealed that she was subjected to a group sexual assault in a bar’s games room. Deputy District Attorney Murphy, portrayed by Kelly McGillis, takes on the case and, despite believing Sarah, hesitates about pursuing charges because of doubts about securing a victory. Her superior, Rudolph, played by Carmen Argenziano, pressures them to find something to charge the accused men with, ultimately leading to a compromise involving a reduced charge after negotiations. Understandably, Sarah is deeply upset by this outcome. The situation escalates further when another man present at the bar that night provokes her into intentionally crashing her car into his. At this point, the lawyer experiences a shift in perspective and, despite opposition from her boss, decides to press charges against other individuals in the bar for encouraging the perpetrators – specifically, criminal solicitation. The question becomes whether she can establish their guilt; if successful, it would also mean those initially given lenient sentences would face the full extent of justice and have details of their assaults formally documented on their records. Foster gives a noteworthy performance, providing a powerful depiction of a woman dealing with a terrible trauma while fighting for what’s right. McGillis is also strong in her role, as is Bernie Coulson, who plays Ken, whose testimony becomes crucial to the possibility of a conviction. The violent scenes near the end of the trial are deeply upsetting and impactful, contributing to Leo Rossi's unsettling portrayal of "Scorpion," the primary instigator of Sarah’s assault. It’s difficult viewing, prompting reflection on how victims can ever truly receive fair treatment within a legal system that sometimes seems inclined towards victim-blaming and is frequently biased against them.
