"The Abyss" contains several scenes that feel contrived, seemingly adjusted to fit the story’s needs; for instance, it's hard to believe Bud doesn't die from the immense pressure as he falls toward what looks like his doom. It's also strange how rapidly he recovers from a state of delirium and manages to disarm a nuclear weapon after suffering such an ordeal. The movie relentlessly piles misfortune upon its characters—it feels like they could have been hit with anything, really—and the effect is that Murphy’s Law seems to be operating at full force, resulting in what has to be called a genuinely exciting and captivating film.
