John Chard on The Absent-Minded Professor

7/10 · Apr 12, 2020

This movie, which I’m calling Substance X or Flubber, was directed by Robert Stevenson, with Bill Walsh adapting Samuel W. Taylor’s story into the screenplay. Fred MacMurray leads the cast alongside Nancy Olsen, Keenan Wynn, Tommy Kirk, Leon Ames, and Elliott Reid; George Bruns handled the music and Edward Colman did the cinematography. It's a silly, family-oriented comedy from Disney that feels really good when you need a distraction from everyday life. MacMurray plays a professor who’s come up with rubber that can fly – he calls it Flubber. It lets people jump super high, makes his car airborne, and predictably gets the attention of Alonzo Hawk, played by Wynn, a less-than-scrupulous businessman. A series of outlandish situations follow (the basketball game is particularly funny), and the professor needs to remember to propose to the woman he’s been meaning to marry – Olsen shines in the part. It's an imaginative story that showed Disney what could be done with live-action films, leading to more successes. I’d give it a 7/10.
