Jean-Pierre Léaud delivers an outstanding performance in this narrative about a young man experiencing difficulties, progressing from school problems to minor offenses, all while under the somewhat indifferent care of his unfaithful mother (Claire Maurier) and carefree father (Albert Rémy), who are frequently arguing. When his behavior eventually draws police attention, they believe that a period in juvenile detention might be beneficial, so he’s sent away—though not for long. The story unfolds in episodes, provoking both laughter and disapproval. It's hard not to feel affection for this rebellious character. He doesn't necessarily seek attention, although he certainly enjoys it; rather, he demonstrates resourcefulness. He is restless; weary of his parents’ constant arguments and teachers who seem unconcerned with him. He’s playful, he appreciates having a good time—particularly with his friend "René" (Patrick Auffay), alongside whom he shares several adventures and even lives briefly. While theft is a serious issue, there's something amusing about the moment he steals a non-functional typewriter from his father's office. The film concludes with one of those scenes that stays with you. Its simplicity, combined with the young boy’s captivating and spirited acting, is what makes this movie remarkable, pleasurable, and likely my best-loved work by François Truffaut.
