This is an exceptionally fine, clever version based on John Buchan’s story about spying and killing during wartime. Robert Donat, as “Hannay,” attends a performance featuring someone with an amazing memory, but unexpectedly finds himself caught up in a situation full of secret dealings that lead to him being wrongly accused of murder and having to escape to the Scottish highlands. It's while there that he meets the doubtful Madeleine Carroll, and they work together attempting to unravel this intricate puzzle. The somber and unsettling landscapes of Scotland heighten the feeling of tension, plus there are two enjoyable brief appearances by Peggy Ashcroft and John Laurie. I felt the resolution didn’t quite live up to the rest of it—but even so, it remains a captivating ninety minutes thanks to Alfred Hitchcock's skilled direction.
