A toast to Mrs. Robinson. Ralph Thomas directed The 39 Steps, which Frank Harvey adapted from John Buchan’s novel. Kenneth More, Taina Elg, Brenda De Banzie, Barry Jones, Reginald Beckwith, and Faith Brook lead the cast. Clifton Parker composed the music, and Ernest Steward handled the cinematography. Some viewers struggled to separate this version of the well-known story from Alfred Hitchcock's excellent 1935 film. That’s unfortunate because considered independently, it’s an entertaining mystery that benefits greatly from More’s lively presence. The plot is compelling; Richard Hannay (More) becomes entangled in a spy case when a woman turns up dead in his apartment. His attempts to uncover the truth place him in peril and lead him to Scotland, where he intends to prove his innocence regarding the murder charge—and understand the phrase "The 39 Steps." It’s true that it doesn't quite reach the heights of Hitchcock's film, opting for a more humorous tone instead of constant suspense. However, Thomas keeps the action moving at a good pace, and the Scottish scenery provides an appealing setting for the enjoyable drama. Hammer Films offered their own interpretation of The Hound of the Baskervilles that same year, with impressive results. Rank Organisation’s adaptation of Buchan's story follows suit. It's entertaining and worth watching if you haven’t already seen it. 7/10
