This low-budget, strange action movie might have been better off without its central hero. Vic Davis (Ryan Phillippe) travels to a college campus to collect his estranged son, Shawn (Jack Griffo), who’s studying theater, for Christmas break. Shawn has developed an interest in Erin (Lexi Simonsen, who delivers a strong performance), the daughter of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Walton (Randy Charach, seeming somewhat rigid). The court is considering a gun control case, which explains the unfortunate title, and some shadowy figures dispatch smooth-talking terrorist "Driver" (Casper Van Dien) and his team to abduct Erin and influence the justice’s decision. From that point on, the film follows a familiar “Die Hard” plot as Davis and Erin battle the criminals. I'm not sure what skincare routine Phillippe, Van Dien, and McNamara are using to maintain their youthful appearances, but I would appreciate a prescription. It seems like Phillippe and Griffo are roughly the same age. This is a standard formula for a movie, but it’s so absurd and confusing that watching it feels like witnessing an accident. The gunfire effects are clearly visible squibs, we know it's Christmas because of a wreath attached to the elevator wall and the bright green and red lighting, and the film drags on longer than necessary. The political themes are unclear; it’s hard to tell which side of the gun control argument the movie favors, and furthermore, they appear to misunderstand basic American legal principles (the Supreme Court can't invalidate a Constitutional amendment). This might not be a significant issue, except that the title refers to the amendment being supported—or seemingly not. I found the dynamic between Shawn and Erin more engaging; it would have been interesting if Davis had been removed from the action entirely, playing a supporting role either through his son’s recollections (he taught Shawn self-defense techniques) or by communicating with him remotely. If the villains hadn't spent so much time drinking whiskey during their conversations, they might have become more focused and made their scheme work. The film establishes the possibility of a sequel that doesn’t seem to generate much enthusiasm; would that be "The 3rd," focusing on housing military personnel in private residences during wartime? Phillippe also co-produced the movie, perhaps hoping to launch his own action series. There's a cast with potential here, but there isn’t enough substance to build a franchise around this story. I’m not interested in another helping. Contains physical violence, gun violence, some gore, profanity, and alcohol use.
