The film’s central idea held promise from the start. A group of five individuals are abducted by an alien species possessing far greater power and each receives a capsule containing something that could be harmful; these capsules can only be unlocked at the owner's discretion, but opening them would mean destruction for all of humanity. The captives come from various countries and backgrounds, and once the aliens reveal their names to the world, those five find themselves in perilous situations—a situation they must navigate over a period of twenty-seven days to prevent global annihilation. Arnold Moss attempts to emulate “Klaatu,” while William Asher presents a thoughtful narrative exploring how everyday people – along with their governments – might respond under such immense pressure. Gene Barry heads up an unfortunately lackluster group of performers, which detracts from the story’s overall quality; he rarely delivered strong performances, and here neither he nor Valerie French, playing “Eve,” manage to capture the suspense inherent in the storyline. Even after multiple viewings, the conclusion feels somewhat underwhelming—though the core concept makes it worthwhile to see.
