Merle Oberon gives a decent performance as Jill, a woman dealing with a troublesome bout of hiccups in her marriage. The narrative proposes that she seeks help from a psychoanalyst to resolve this awkward condition. Soon after, she finds herself losing faith in her husband, Larry, portrayed by Melvyn Douglas, and following an encounter with the eccentric pianist Alexander, played by Burgess Meredith, confusion reigns. I must admit Jill tested my patience; she comes across as rather irritating—spoiled and lacking perspective. Meredith is similarly unappealing, and it seemed they were a match for one another. It occurred to me that Larry might be better off without them. Nevertheless, the story moves along smoothly, and there are moments of humor as their actions spiral into something absurd. It's not an easy film to enjoy, given that the characters are largely unpleasant and self-centered, but the overall production values and the writing help create a movie where the acting is genuinely quite good.
