It’s an entertaining account of how "Tetris" transitioned from a simple game enjoyed in the Soviet Union to a globally successful handheld title generating substantial profits. The story revolves around “Stein” (played by Toby Jones), someone who recognized the potential and managed to bring it to a games exhibition, where it was then secured by the determined “Hank” (Taron Egerton), intent on profiting from this block-sliding phenomenon. What follows is a rather hectic narrative involving licensing agreements, sub-licensing deals, perilous journeys, corruption, bribery, interactions with the KGB, and Robert Maxwell, leading up to an ending that's already well documented. I found Toby Jones’ performance quite enjoyable, as was Roger Allan’s portrayal of the assertive billionaire Maxwell, but much of the rest felt somewhat convoluted. While it might offer some insight into the complexities of development, there’s a considerable amount of dialogue and the plot details aren't always presented in a clear or consistent manner – at times the pacing feels sluggish, while other times it seems hurried. The film is set against the backdrop of Gorbachev’s soon-to-collapse USSR, which provides some amusing instances of maneuvering, betrayal, and financial opportunism, but not quite enough to hold your attention for the entire two-hour runtime. It's passable, but ultimately unremarkable.
