I typically don’t care for children appearing in films, but Edward Furlong brings a certain something to his portrayal of the ten-year-old "John Connor." Apparently, he is now the focus of “Skynet's” most recent scheme to crush the resistance fighting against their planned global takeover—which seems frighteningly imminent in 2029. A more advanced version of the “T1000,” played by Robert Patrick, has been dispatched to eliminate him. Fortunately, his older self managed to send one of the initial models (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back to safeguard him. As destruction increases and casualties accumulate, the boy persuades his guardian to rescue his mother from a secure facility—officials had dismissed her accounts of futuristic “terminator” robots after the previous incident—and also to cease killing indiscriminately. It apparently took James Cameron considerable time to develop this sequel, and it comes remarkably close to matching the quality of its predecessor. There’s plenty of action, impressive visual and special effects, as well as some genuinely amusing scenes that enable the narrative to offer a surprising degree of character development for an action film. You become somewhat attached to these characters, and while I felt the ending went on a bit too long, it's a reliably enjoyable experience at the movie theater—even allowing someone who isn’t particularly skilled as an actor to command attention. It was really fun.
