It’s another teen comedy-drama centered on a familiar coming-of-age story drawn from the novel of the same name. Though not produced by a major studio, recognizable actors make it potentially worthwhile, and their acting wasn't bad either. The film follows Lucy, a teenage girl whose father frequently visits from Canada while her mother is relaxed and easygoing. It’s about a time of sexual exploration for her, with her initial interest being in her close friend Kenny. However, circumstances quickly shift, pushing her to pursue the life she desires, and what unfolds is how everything develops before the story concludes. I was inclined to give it a higher score; it certainly deserves some consideration, but the storytelling felt uneven at times. That’s not always a problem, even if a narrative starts off in an unpredictable way, but I was somewhat let down by the ending. Sarah Bolger delivered a strong performance; you could almost say she carried the entire film. Perhaps that's how the story was intended, but it didn’t fully engage me because it seemed to rely too heavily on her character, which left other characters feeling underdeveloped. It could also be said that it was her narrative and it needed more support around her. It's not simply a coming-of-age film; considering how the story wraps up, it’s also about self-discovery. The main character seemed to be caught between adolescence and adulthood, and the climax felt rushed. A difficult aspect is the R rating for a teen movie—despite the absence of nudity even during intimate moments—the subject matter deals with experiences and moving on in life. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend seeking it out; only watch it if you find yourself without many other options. 5.5/10
