This Italian film, attempting to capitalize on the popularity of “Jaws,” feels like a lesser imitation, though it does have some redeeming qualities. After several deaths occur near San Diego, a marine mammal trainer—played by Bo Hopkins—believes that ultrasonic soundwaves used in constructing an underwater tunnel are responsible. Claude Akins portrays the local sheriff. “Tentacles,” released in 1977, brought together recognizable American actors to boost its appeal, but Henry Fonda’s appearance is brief and John Huston's role feels insignificant. Shelley Winters appears in a subplot that seems unnecessary and simply stretches out the running time. Bo Hopkins does his best to carry the movie as a sympathetic lead character, however, it doesn't have the memorable people or clear narrative structure found in “Jaws.” The sometimes questionable sound mixing is another drawback. Despite its shortcomings, there are moments of interest, particularly with the performances from Delia Boccardo (as Vicky) and Sherry Buchanan (as Judy). The unusual musical score, drawing on elements of Spaghetti Western soundtracks combined with the sounds of Animals-era Pink Floyd, stands out; similarly striking is a scene depicting lifeless fish at the bottom of the ocean, and the final confrontation with the threat is handled in an original way. Many movies were made following “Jaws”’ success, some proving to be quite enjoyable on their own terms—examples include "Orca,” “Piranha,” “Jaws 2,” “Humanoids from the Deep,” and “The Beast.” Sadly, “Tentacles” doesn't measure up alongside those. Still, it might offer something of interest if you’re in the mood for this type of movie and have already seen the others; just prepare yourself for a significant amount of slow pacing. The film has a length of 1 hour, 42 minutes, and was filmed on location around San Diego, including Pismo Beach, La Jolla, Point Loma, Shelter Island, Oceanside, and Marineland of the Pacific in Rancho Palos Verdes; the underwater scenes were shot in Italy.
