I get that Christopher Nolan intended to explore the concept of time, since that’s fundamentally what the film is about – and it's true he has a reputation for making movies that are difficult to follow – but in this case, he’s created something dull. The notion of events unfolding in reverse is intriguing, yet the underlying principles remain vague. It’s never clear what the characters are ultimately trying to achieve; I can grasp the idea of hidden information, but a film needs to be engaging, and 'Tenet' simply isn’t. There’s nothing here that sparks my curiosity or makes me eager to piece things together; it’s easily overlooked. Of course, people will suggest seeing this in theaters, but the lengthy duration is likely to deter many general moviegoers. Sadly, ‘Tenet’ isn’t going to rescue the 2020 box office numbers. I work at a cinema, and it's accurate to say that its performance was significantly below expectations. We’ll probably see more videos on YouTube offering opinions about 'Tenet' than articles analyzing its deeper meaning. Christopher Nolan has made his least memorable film so far; it isn’t poorly made, and I’m certain his most devoted fans will love it, but for everyone else, there’s not much to appreciate. ‘Tenet’ won’t be celebrated as another “groundbreaking visual spectacle” from Nolan or for "saving cinema." It'll likely be remembered for its unusual release plan and the fact that it was shown during a global pandemic, which is disappointing. Like so many other things this year, 'Tenet' is ultimately a lost cause.
