Wuchak on Teen Witch

6/10 · Apr 17, 2019

This lively, upbeat movie from the eighties centers on a teenager discovering she has supernatural abilities. A shy girl living in Southern California (Robin Lively) finds herself with witchcraft powers when she turns sixteen and starts using them to become more well-liked and capture the attention of a good-looking football player she’s had a crush on (Dan Gauthier). However, does this newfound power really lead to happiness? Mandy Ingber portrays her friend, Polly, while Zelda Rubinstein appears as fortune teller Madame Serena. "Teen Witch," released in 1989, is enjoyable if you're looking for an eighties film about growing up and can accept the lightheartedness and fantasy aspects. It shares qualities with "Pretty in Pink," also from 1986, has a similar playful feel to “Can’t Buy Me Love” (1987), and incorporates fantastical elements like “Teen Wolf” did in 1985. The movie clearly influenced "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" which premiered in 1996 and continued as a television series. It's an entertaining, energetic teen film with warmth, but it doesn’t quite reach the level of classics such as “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982), “Footloose” (1984) or "The Karate Kid" (1984). Gauthier resembles a less polished version of Tom Cruise. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 30 minutes and was filmed in Glendale & Los Angeles, California. GRADE: B-/C+
