This film feels like the worst possible kind of teddy bear. It's a tricky thing, these movies about serial killers; you really need to feel that your time was well spent. Matthew Bright’s contribution to the regrettable collection left behind by Theodore Robert Bundy is striking and sticks with you. Is it fair to accuse Bright and those who financed the project of taking advantage of a tragic situation? I don't believe so. The way filmmaking has evolved allows creators to address challenging topics in order to create a strong effect. For the most part, Bright portrays Bundy’s actual life and his terrible crimes. His family background and the devastation he caused are depicted vividly; anyone who had any doubts about Bundy’s wickedness from previous movies, television shows, or books will find this version to be an open sore, rubbed with salt. I can't really suggest that it should be seen as a must-watch—some of the images have lingered in my mind for five days after I watched it. But isn't that kind of what’s intended? Aside from some small alterations (we see a scene celebrating just before the execution, which didn’t actually occur), this is among the very best films within its violent horror category. It possesses artistic value due to its impact and Michael Reilly Burke’s brave and unsettling performance as Bundy—if you can handle it. 8/10
