It seems to me that roughly twenty-three minutes pass before C. Aubrey Smith ("Parker") and his daughter "Jane" (Maureen O’Sullivan) hear the jungle call of Johnny Weissmuller, which marks when the treasure hunt truly begins to pick up speed. These travelers, along with Neil Hamilton ("Holt"), are looking for the fabled elephant's graveyard—wealth that surpasses even the most extreme desires. Naturally, this trip through an unexplored region is full of dangers: difficult rivers, towering mountains, and wild animals—and a significant number of hungry ones at that. A lot of the visuals appear to be recycled material which isn’t ideal, but there’s still some spark once the nimble and attractive "Tarzan" appears and abducts/saves (depending on how you look at it) the lovely “Jane,” thus setting up what will become a cinematic classic. The production values don't hold up so well viewed nearly a century later, yet the narrative is a charming boy-meets-girl story with plenty of action, sound effects, and a fair amount of bare-chested romance. I can only guess that for many viewers back then, this would have been their first look at a jungle setting, and it must have been quite thrilling to witness. There are numerous inconsistencies in the plot, but I’d recommend not evaluating it through today's lens (although I’d say it’s still preferable to the versions from 1981, 1984 or 2016). It’s an entertaining adventure that is best enjoyed simply for what it is.
