This Disney movie seemed like it could have been something special, but ultimately fell short of expectations. Like many people who grew up recently, Disney films were a big part of my childhood. For reasons I can’t quite recall, this particular film never caught my attention and I hadn't seen it until today. After watching it, I must say I wasn’t impressed. The biggest issue I found was the script; it felt uninspired and poorly written, serving as a loose adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough’s original story. The characters aren't particularly well-developed, with many being irritating (Jane’s father, the gorillas, and especially Terk and Tantor, who are just an unfortunate pair). Even Tarzan himself seems bland and uninteresting. It felt like the writing team didn't know what to do with the material and simply made things up as they went along. Adding to this, there are numerous plot inconsistencies. For instance, it’s unclear how much time passes, leading to the impression that Tarzan learned human language almost instantly. Another oddity is Tarzan’s failure to recognize the obvious physical differences between himself and the gorillas or his immediate connection with Jane. Surely he must have seen his reflection at some point? I'm not saying this film is terrible… but I do feel Disney has produced much better and more engaging work in the past. Despite my criticisms, I think the voice cast did their best, everyone fulfilling what was asked of them. Personally, I didn’t care for all of the choices made; Tony Goldwyn's performance as the main character felt rather average, his voice lacking any real spark (though the character himself seems to have been stripped of charisma). Glenn Close stood out most for me, although she had very little dialogue, while Rosie O’Donnell’s voice was particularly grating. The film's strength lies in its visuals and animation, which are beautifully executed thanks to high-quality CGI. It might even be one of the first Disney films to regularly utilize computer animation. The look is stunning, noticeably different from earlier films. As with most Disney movies, there’s a strong emphasis on music, with Phil Collins brought in to compose and perform several songs. Unfortunately, despite winning an Oscar for Best Song for “You'll be in my Heart”, I didn’t enjoy any of the songs and found the soundtrack disappointing overall.
