It’s funny, I always thought I’d already watched ‘Tarzan’, but apparently this was my first viewing—and it really is a great film! Phil Collins’ score is fantastic; it genuinely enhances the movie significantly. "Son of Man," which I was already familiar with, is an excellent track that complements the montage beautifully. The editing occasionally feels quite abrupt, although the animation itself is visually appealing. Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane are well-cast, as are Glenn Close (Kala) and Brian Blessed (Clayton). Rosie O'Donnell was my favorite part of the cast; she plays Terk—not a particularly large role—but she manages to make her character really stand out. The film does incorporate elements familiar from other jungle movies, like 1967’s ‘The Jungle Book’ and, as you might expect but still find amusing, 1997's 'George of the Jungle'. The opening scenes especially benefit from Collins’ music; after about halfway through, it becomes more subdued while also forging its own path with this kind of story. I am curious to see what direction the sequels take.
