I’ve always struggled to understand Bogdanovich’s work, and I still have my doubts. _Targets_ presents an interesting concept—a classic horror icon (Karloff, giving a commendable performance considering the material) encounters a contemporary killer—but the execution falls short. While Karloff is excellent, as expected, there's a sadness in his portrayal of someone aware that their time has passed. Beyond that, it’s largely an unengaging experience. The scenes involving the sniper are intended to be suspenseful, yet they feel strangely lifeless. Furthermore, the writing is quite poor; characters speak in a way that suggests they've only recently been introduced to the idea of dialogue. It seems Bogdanovich wanted to explore themes related to violence and cinema, but became more focused on demonstrating his own perceived intelligence. It’s not entirely without merit, but it’s not something I’d eagerly revisit.
