Peter Bogdanovich’s debut feature, TARGETS (1968), came about through an agreement with Roger Corman, who agreed to finance it on a few stipulations. Those conditions were that Boris Karloff had to be in the cast—he was indebted to Corman for two days of work—and that the film's length would be extended using material from a previous Karloff movie to control expenses. The film initially struggled to find screenings, considered too relevant for many venues at the time. It’s unfortunate because it gave Karloff a significant part near the end of his career. Bogdanovich weaves together two separate narratives that eventually meet in a concluding sequence: one focuses on a young man who resorts to violence after feeling he has no future; the other centers on an older movie performer convinced that his best days are gone. The film felt pertinent when it was released due to what was happening in society, remains relevant today given current discussions about firearms legislation, and ultimately—because of Boris Karloff’s performance—transcends any specific moment in time.
