It’s clear this movie hasn’t aged gracefully!* However, I did genuinely have a good time watching it. 'Eight Legged Freaks', take note! It looks like I’ve discovered a new favorite spider rampage movie. Seriously though, *'Tarantula'* succeeds in what it set out to do – there are moments that genuinely feel creepy. The special effects have aged fairly normally, but there are still some really impressive shots. The spider looks quite good when shown in wide shots; the problems come up when the creature is close to the camera—which results in a stark contrast of black and white shapes. Speaking of the visuals, it's a very dark film, particularly during nighttime scenes. Regardless, the makeup effects look fantastic. Leo G. Carroll, John Agar, and Mara Corday are all entertaining in their parts; they have good chemistry together, which is obviously important. Corday oddly reminds me of actress Madelyn Cline for some reason—I’m not entirely sure why, but I think it's because of Corday's expressions and the way she carries herself. Clint Eastwood has another brief – though, quite different in terms of the plot – role near the end. He delivers a few lines, but it isn’t one of his roles that will stick with you for very long. It’s hard to believe Universal made seven 'Francis' films but only one of these. That’s unfortunate. I would definitely be interested in seeing a remake. * = I’m told, and I understand, it looked amazing for its time.
