Cate Blanchett delivers an outstanding performance as Lydia Tár, a driven and exceptionally talented conductor who shares her life with her violinist partner Sharon (Nina Hoss) and their young daughter Petra (Mila Bogojivic). Having achieved recognition from those in her field, she now holds the position of principal conductor for the Berlin Philharmonic. This role presents numerous challenges—selecting repertoire, motivating the orchestra, and managing a less-than-capable assistant Sebastian (Allan Corduner), who was favored by Tár’s predecessor Davis (Julian Glover)—while also navigating the expectations of her financial backer Kaplan (Mark Strong). The constant need to balance these demands leads to compromises that affect those around her. She often depends on her assistant Francesca (Noémie Merlant), and it's through their interactions that vulnerabilities begin to surface beneath Tár’s seemingly impenetrable exterior. Following the suicide of one of her former musicians, rumors emerge suggesting potential instances of inappropriate behavior and abuse of power. It brought to mind parallels with the situation involving British choreographer Liam Scarlett, which left me feeling the subject matter wasn't fully explored. The film does effectively demonstrate how quickly gossip can escalate and damage reputations. I didn’t feel I had sufficient information to form a firm opinion on whether she acted inappropriately or if she was unfairly targeted as a consequence of someone else’s actions. The final scenes are quite impactful, leaving the audience to question whether it represents an exoneration or a grave injustice. Regardless of the narrative's shortcomings, Blanchett is performing at her best, and the orchestral music is undeniably impressive.
