It’s remarkable that everything was shot on an iPhone 5S—a phone I used until recently when my battery gave out and I upgraded to a 12 mini. Beyond that impressive technical accomplishment, though, the film doesn't offer much of substance. "Sin-Dee" (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is released from jail after serving 28 days for possession, only to discover that her boyfriend, “Chester” (James Ransone), has been unfaithful with "Dinah" (Mickey O’Hagan). Furious, she and her best friend, "Alexandra" (Mya Taylor), set out to find this woman and confront Chester about his deception. Meanwhile, taxi driver "Razmik" (Karren Karagulian) interrupts the main narrative with some amusing short scenes featuring his passengers: “Mia,” a man named after a bird, a couple who’ve been drinking heavily before Christmas and leave him a smelly, unwanted present—all while he searches for transvestite encounters in an alley. The various storylines eventually connect when it's revealed that the Armenian cabbie is attracted to "Sin-Dee," culminating in a chaotic scene at a donut shop involving his wife, child, and mother-in-law! The handheld camera work creates a sense of intimacy, presenting a documentary-like style focused on roughly six people who aren’t particularly pleasant or captivating as they go about their lives. The film moves quickly, with little downtime, but the story itself is rather disappointing. "Sin-Dee" forces "Dinah" to walk barefoot around downtown LA at will; no one intervenes—not even when she pulls her onto a bus! The dialogue feels weak and filled with anger, the characters are self-centered, and I found myself losing interest after about thirty minutes. Is it meant to be about friendship? They all seem just as willing to betray each other as they are to get out of bed in the morning. Sean Baker has created an intense film here, but there’s nothing to truly engage the viewer. If this were a documentary about transvestite prostitutes in LA, it would portray them without any sympathy—and adding dialogue doesn't alter that fundamental impression. As a demonstration of how filmmaking will be transformed by smaller, handheld filming technologies, it's an excellent example of a flexible and portable technique. However, as a story about people, it’s quite bleak.
