John Chard on Tall in the Saddle

7/10 · Mar 21, 2020

I have an appreciation for curmudgeonly older guys; I’m hoping to become one someday. Tall in the Saddle credits Edwin L. Marin as director, with Michael Hogan, Paul Fix and Gordon Ray Young handling the writing duties. The cast includes John Wayne, Ella Raines, Ward Bond, George ‘Gabby’ Hayes and Audrey Long. Roy Webb composed the music, and Robert De Grasse was responsible for the cinematography. Rocklin (Wayne), a ranch hand, comes to town to begin his new position, only to discover that his employer has been killed and the people he encounters seem suspicious. The title is fitting considering John Wayne’s height, but it doesn't really capture what the movie is about overall. The storyline contains some interesting layers, where underlying tensions mix with a murder investigation and dishonest dealings. Marin keeps things moving quickly, ensuring that the story never drags. The action sequences are lively; despite some dated rear projection effects, the brawls, shooting and pursuits maintain an energetic pace. Raines is wonderfully alluring (and thankfully not just there to fill a quota), contrasting with Long’s more understated beauty, while Wayne delivers a performance full of familiar strengths. Beautiful photography elevates everything, from the California scenery to the black-and-white tones, resulting in a thoroughly entertaining Western from the nineteen forties. 7/10
