I recently saw another review of Tall Girl on this site, and I believe it's the only one rated as low as 1 star here on TMDB. There are definitely many negative reviews at that other movie information website. I understand some criticisms about how much emphasis is placed on someone being bullied because of their height, suggesting it’s unrealistic. It feels exaggerated, at least. If Jodi had played basketball instead of the piano, things would be different – no pun intended. She'd likely be admired and receive encouragement after each game rather than people jokingly asking her about the weather conditions above. Perhaps if she pursued a different activity, she wouldn’t have been treated so badly. However, I can also understand why she might feel mistreated. If she made it through high school with only two friends, one of whom constantly pursues her romantically and even lies to manipulate her into dating him, that would understandably take a toll on her emotional well-being. It seems like they could have reduced the intensity of her unhappiness and feelings of being targeted. I also didn’t find it believable that Stig would be considered the shortest and least attractive person in school back in Sweden. The story depends on this to justify his dramatic shift in behavior toward Jodi. They portray Jodi as a kind individual despite her sadness and lack of popularity, but Stig becomes unpleasant simply because he's suddenly popular? That feels like a weak explanation. So yes, the movie has flaws and relies on easy solutions. It’s not so bad that it deserves to be rated 1 star in my opinion, but it will stop me from watching the sequel that was released afterward. (Wait, don’t romantic comedies usually have happy endings? Shouldn't they avoid sequels?)
